Biosecurity Washdown Services

Lake Borumba, Imbil QLD

Project Overview

Wallum Industries was engaged to deliver specialist biosecurity hygiene washdown services at the Lake Borumba Project, a major renewable energy development in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The objective was to prevent the introduction and spread of invasive weed species and soil-borne contaminants throughout the construction area, ensuring full compliance with Queensland Government environmental and biosecurity regulations. This project formed a critical component of the broader sustainability commitment, aligning operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.

The Challenge

The Lake Borumba project spans an environmentally sensitive region with significant natural assets and waterways. A trusted partner with the capacity to deliver consistent, compliant, and efficient biosecurity control measures across a high-traffic worksite was required. The challenge lay in managing the constant movement of vehicles and heavy machinery under varying weather conditions while maintaining zero risk of cross-contamination between external sites and the project area. Wallum Industries was also tasked with ensuring that these environmental protections did not impede operational productivity or delay project schedules.

Our Approach

Wallum Industries designed, constructed, and operated a dedicated on-site hygiene washdown facility, staffed by experienced environmental and biosecurity personnel. Our service model was developed under Wallum’s ‘Weed and Seed’ Environmental Management Framework, which integrates technical expertise with a deep respect for Country and traditional knowledge. Certified washdown protocols were applied in accordance with Biosecurity Queensland standards, supported by controlled entry and exit procedures for all vehicles and machinery. Each washdown was meticulously recorded and verified to provide complete audit transparency. The facility was managed in close coordination with project teams to ensure seamless site access and minimal downtime, maintaining operational flow while safeguarding environmental integrity.

Key Services Delivered

Establishment and operation of biosecurity washdown facilities, weed and seed inspection and certification of vehicles, plant, and equipment. Environmental management and runoff containment systems, data recording and reporting to meet compliance and audit requirements, and workforce training in biosecurity awareness and contamination control.

Outcomes & Achievements

Over the duration of the contract, Wallum Industries achieved zero biosecurity breaches, demonstrating the effectiveness of our management systems and on-site processes. Vehicle and machinery movements were processed efficiently, ensuring project continuity without compromising compliance. Our work contributed to strengthening the reputation of the business in relation to environmental responsibility and operational excellence within the renewable energy sector. The project also created local employment opportunities and supported Indigenous participation within the environmental services workforce. Through this partnership, Wallum successfully combined high-performance service delivery with measurable social and environmental outcomes.

Community & Cultural Impact

The Lake Borumba project exemplified Wallum Industries’ commitment to Country and to sustainable industry practice. By applying our ‘Weed and Seed’ framework, the project blended traditional cultural values with contemporary biosecurity and environmental management techniques. Indigenous employees were integral to the day-to-day operations of the washdown facility, gaining valuable experience and certification in environmental management, land care, and compliance processes. This approach not only protected the local ecosystem but also advanced Wallum’s broader objective of building meaningful, long-term pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in essential environmental industries.
